Image of the Month – March 2022
Cana Island Lighthouse
Door County, Wisconsin. Cana Island Lighthouse.
The lighthouse at Cana Island is pretty unique. It *is* an island, but there is a pretty shallow bit of water that depending on the tides/winds and such, you can either walk right though a few inches of water or take a tractor ride over. How many Islands can you walk to these days? A few, but its rare!
At 153 years old as of this writing, its a very cool place to visit in Door County. The island itself is just under 9 acres with the centerpiece being a very beautiful piece of history – an 89 foot tall navigational beacon. Talk about adventure. With some clouds rolling in, I tried to imagine being the lighthouse keeper – duty bound to keep that light lit during rough seas and storms. Mother nature has her way many times however and there are a number of notable shipwrecks in the area, including 7 ships that went down in a terrible storm (nicknamed The Alpena Gale – the storms most famous victim) on October 15, 1880.
I highly recommend a visit to Cana Island when you are visiting Door County. Between the unique journey to get there and the Lighthouse itself – is a very fun trip. Bring a picnic basket and take your time!
